The Sea-Based X-Band Radar
The Sea-Based X-Band Radar (SBX-1) is a floating, self-propelled, mobile, active electronically scanned array early warning radar station designed to operate in mid-ocean under conditions of high winds and heavy seas. It measures 381 feet (longer than a football field) and 279 feet high (nearly twice as tall as the Roman Colosseum). This self-propelled floating ‘stadium’ has many small radomes for various communication tasks and a large central dome that encloses its 4 million pound phased-array X-band radar antenna.
